How many people actually migrated to the Yukon during the Gold rush years? What was the impact of the Gold Rush on Yukon's population during that time? In this activity, you will analyze how the Gold Rush influenced Yukon's population numbers and makeup.

- This brings you to an area where you can examine animated population pyramids of all the provinces and territories from 1901-2001 based on census data.
- This type of graph is called a population pyramid or an age-sex structure. It shows the number of men in different categories on the left and the number of women in different categories on the right. The total population is also shown.

- Where was the first gold rush in North America and when did it take place?
- Define placer.
- Who first discovered placer gold in BC and when and where did he discover it?
- What were the names of the two biggest gold rushes in BC?
- How many people came to Victoria to search for gold?
- What was the name of a town that flourished during the Gold Rush?
- What were roadhouses?
- Find the page where you can watch Cariboo miners pan for gold. What do you notice?
- Choose one of the 'people' from the Gold Rush and write 5 interesting facts about that person. Copy a picture of that person and print off your facts to make a mini-poster.
- Read the history of Barkerville. Write a paragraph summarizing what happened to Barkerville.
- Look and analyze the pictures of Barkerville. What has happened to the natural vegetation? What do you notice about the buildings in Barkerville? Why do you think they were built so close together?
- Look around the site and make up your own question for Ms. Fraser! :)

- Afterwards, we will divide up the dates and make posters to display the timeline across the classroom.
